The Book of Clarence

Set in first-century Jerusalem, The Book of Clarence follows Clarence, a down-on-his-luck man trying to escape debt and build a better life for his family. Drawn to the growing following around Jesus and his apostles, he sets out to profit from the movement and claim a place of his own, a scheme that gradually turns him toward questions of belief and how he wants to live.

Jeymes Samuel directed and wrote the film, his third feature after They Die by Dawn and The Harder They Fall. LaKeith Stanfield plays the dual roles of Clarence and Thomas, heading a cast that includes Omar Sy, RJ Cyler, David Oyelowo, Alfre Woodard and Teyana Taylor. Samuel produced alongside James Lassiter and Jay-Z, and the production involved 53 credited cast members and 159 credited crew.

Released in January 2024 and running 129 minutes, the American production was made for about 40 million dollars and returned roughly 6 million dollars worldwide. Ratings place it in middling territory, with 5.7 out of 10 on IMDb from around 8,100 votes and 5.8 out of 10 on TMDB from about 145 votes.
