Short description

Set in 1950s Baltimore, Cry-Baby centres on Wade Walker, a leather-jacketed teenage rebel whose nickname comes from his ability to shed a single tear at will. His reputation and his taste for rock music and fast cars make him irresistible to many girls, among them Allison Vernon-Williams, a respectable student from a well-off family. Allison already has a boyfriend, Baldwin, who meets with her family's approval, but she is drawn instead to Wade and his crowd. The clash between her sheltered upbringing and his world of rock and roll drives the film's central conflict.

John Waters wrote and directed the film, which followed Hairspray in his filmography and was produced by Rachel Talalay for Universal Pictures and Imagine Entertainment. Johnny Depp plays Wade, with Amy Locane as Allison, Susan Tyrrell as Ramona Rickettes, Stephen Mailer as Baldwin, Iggy Pop as Belvedere Rickettes and Ricki Lake as Pepper Walker. The production cost 11 million dollars and returned about 8 million worldwide.

Audiences have received it moderately: on IMDb it holds 6.5 out of 10 from around 68,000 votes, while on TMDB it also stands at 6.5 out of 10, from roughly 1,595 votes. The two audience ratings agree closely, indicating a generally middling but consistent response.

What's left behind the scenes

  • James Intveld and Rachel Sweet provide the singing voices for Johnny Depp and Amy Locane in the film.
  • Although Johnny Depp was not entrusted with performing the vocal parts of his character, the actor’s musical and concert experience was still useful: Depp acted as a consultant and helped assistants choose guitars, amplifiers, and other musical equipment.
  • The film is set in Baltimore – the hometown of director John Waters – in 1954.
  • Johnny Depp hates to dance, but director John Waters convinced him it was necessary for the film.
  • Iggy Pop was forced to shave his head for the film. John Waters still keeps a lock of his hair in a photo album at home.
  • Tom Cruise, Robert Downey Jr., and Jim Carrey were also considered for the role of Cry-Baby.
  • Drew Barrymore was considered for the role of Allison.
  • The film is set in 1954. However, Milton in Ramona's house is reading an issue of Tales To Astonish #12, which wouldn't be released until October 1960.
  • Prisoners are watching the film "Creature from the Black Lagoon" (1954) with 3D glasses, but a regular black and white version is playing on the screen.
  • To find a young actor for the role of Wade "Cry-Baby" Walker, director John Waters spent $30 on magazines for teenagers. Johnny Depp was on every cover, very popular at the time due to the series "21 Jump Street" (1987-1991). Depp found the script funny and strange, and he agreed to take on this unusual role for himself in an attempt to move away from the image of a teenage idol.
  • Although the tattoo with the name "Cry-Baby" on Johnny Depp's arm is fake, the tattoo of the Native American above it is real.
