The Crime Is Mine

Madeleine Verdier is a young actress in 1930s Paris with plenty of charm but little money and even less talent. When a well-known producer is found dead, she becomes the prime suspect. Her closest friend Pauline, a lawyer without a practice, defends her, and the court accepts a claim of self-defense. The acquittal turns Madeleine into a celebrated figure, and fame and success follow, until the true circumstances of the producer's death threaten to surface.

François Ozon directed and co-wrote the screenplay with Philippe Piazzo. The film is the eighteenth of the twenty features he has directed in chronological order, arriving between Peter von Kant and When Fall Is Coming. Nadia Tereszkiewicz and Rebecca Marder play the two friends, with Isabelle Huppert, Fabrice Luchini, Dany Boon and André Dussollier heading the supporting cast. The production involved 26 credited cast members and 61 credited crew, and was made for a budget of 14 million US dollars.

On IMDb the film holds 6.5 out of 10 from around 7,300 votes, and on TMDB it also stands at 6.5 from roughly 480 votes, while a critics' rating of 7.2 from 65 reviews places it somewhat higher. Its worldwide box office of 10 million US dollars came in below its production budget.
