Marvin's Room

Bessie has spent two decades caring for her bedridden father, Marvin, in their Florida home, while her sister Lee left for Ohio and built a life of her own as a hairdresser raising two sons. When Bessie is diagnosed with leukemia, she needs a bone marrow transplant from a relative, and Lee returns to the family house with her boys. The reunion forces the estranged sisters to confront the old grievances that drove them apart, with Lee's troubled teenage son Hank caught in the middle.

Marvin's Room was released in December 1996, directed by Jerry Zaks from a screenplay by Scott McPherson. Meryl Streep plays Lee and Diane Keaton plays Bessie, with Leonardo DiCaprio as Hank, Robert De Niro as Wally Carter, Hume Cronyn as Marvin and Gwen Verdon as Ruth. It was produced by Scott Rudin, De Niro and Jane Rosenthal.

The film had a budget of 23 million dollars and took about 13 million dollars worldwide, a modest return. On IMDb it holds 6.7 out of 10 from roughly 32,000 votes, and on TMDB it also stands at 6.7 out of 10, from a much smaller base of 639 votes. A critics' rating of 6.9 out of 10 from 48 reviews places it slightly above both audience scores.
