Short description

F/X centers on Rollie Tyler, a skilled Hollywood special effects artist whose talents at creating convincing illusions attract the attention of government agents. They hire him to stage the fake assassination of a mob witness, but the deception goes wrong when the man disappears and Tyler finds himself blamed for a murder he only pretended to commit. With both the authorities and criminals pursuing him, he must rely on his professional expertise to survive. Brian Dennehy plays Lt. Leo McCarthy, the detective drawn into the case.

The film was released in February 1986 and runs 109 minutes. It was directed by Robert Mandel and written by Robert T. Megginson and Gregory Fleeman, with Dodi Fayed and Jack Wiener producing for Orion Pictures. Bryan Brown leads as Rollie Tyler, alongside Diane Venora, Cliff DeYoung, Mason Adams and Jerry Orbach among a credited cast of 21. Made for about 10 million dollars, it earned roughly twice that worldwide.

F/X was Mandel's second feature, following Independence Day in 1983 and preceding School Ties in 1992 and The Substitute in 1996. On TMDB it holds a rating of 6.6 out of 10 from 520 votes.

What's left behind the scenes

  • Special effects artist John Stears later claimed that intelligence agency representatives had approached him with requests to "create the illusion of a real-life killing."
