Short description
Ultraviolet is set in a future in which a genetically altered strain of humans has emerged, set apart from the rest of the population by enhanced speed, stamina and intelligence. As fear of the infected grows, the government moves toward eliminating them, and the two groups edge toward open conflict. Violet, a woman infected with the condition, is drawn into the middle of the struggle when she becomes the protector of a young boy the authorities regard as dangerous to ordinary humans and have marked for death.
Milla Jovovich plays Violet, with Cameron Bright as the boy, Six, and Nick Chinlund, Sebastien Andrieu and William Fichtner among the supporting cast. The film was written and directed by Kurt Wimmer, following his earlier Equilibrium (2002). It was produced by John Baldecchi and Pauline Chan and made as a co-production between Hong Kong and the United States, with a budget of about 30 million dollars. Its worldwide box office of roughly 31 million dollars fell not far short of that figure, a modest return for a wide-release science fiction action film.
On IMDb, voters rate it 4.4 out of 10 from about 86,000 votes, while the smaller TMDB user base gives it 5.2 out of 10 from roughly 1,800 votes. A critics' rating of 3 out of 10 across 81 reviews places it below even the lower of those audience scores. The film runs 87 minutes.
