Domino
Short description
Domino is based on the life of Domino Harvey, a young woman from a privileged background who turned away from a career in modelling to become a bounty hunter. She joins forces with two men, Ed Mosbey and Choco, who work tracking down people who have skipped bail, and together they take on the pursuit of criminals for reward. Their work attracts the attention of a television producer who wants to build a reality show around them, while a larger case involving a stolen sum of money draws them into a situation far beyond their usual jobs.
Tony Scott directed the film, the thirteenth of the sixteen features he made, following Man on Fire and preceding Déjà Vu. Richard Kelly wrote the screenplay, and Scott produced with Samuel Hadida. Keira Knightley plays Domino, with Mickey Rourke as Ed, Edgar Ramírez as Choco, Delroy Lindo as Claremont Williams, Mo'Nique as Lateesha Rodriguez and Christopher Walken as Mark Heiss. The production involved 57 credited cast members and 234 credited crew, and cost about 50 million dollars, against a worldwide gross of roughly 23 million.
Reception was muted: on IMDb the film holds 5.9 out of 10 from around 71,000 votes, and on TMDB 5.9 out of 10 from about 1,300 votes, while critics gave it 4 out of 10 across 154 reviews.
What's left behind the scenes
- In late May 2005, FBI agents arrested Domino Harvey, the real-life inspiration for Keira Knightley's character in the film, with a million-dollar stash of amphetamines. The woman was charged with possession, distribution of narcotics, and racketeering.
- On June 27, 2005, Domino Harvey was found dead in her home in Los Angeles.
- Thanks to Gusmano Cesaretti, Michael Mann's constant assistant, Tony Scott was able to film a real gang from 18th Street, Los Angeles.
- Tony Scott found Domino in Beverly Hills, where she lived with her mother, Pauline Stone, and stepfather, Peter Morton. He invited Domino to his office and offered to make a film about her life. Harvey agreed and sold the rights to adapt her life story. According to the Los Angeles Times, she was paid $360,000. Tony Scott interviewed Harvey, her commander Ed Martinez, and Choco, who worked with her. Tony also met with bail bondsman Clermont Williams III, who gave them jobs.
