Assistant District Attorney Tom Logan is pursuing a promotion when he becomes entangled with defense attorney Laura Kelly and her erratic client, Chelsea Deardon. Chelsea is accused of stealing a valuable painting created by her father, who died in a fire years earlier along with much of his art. While Chelsea seeks to recover the remaining works she believes are hers by right, her actions lead Logan and Kelly into a broader and more dangerous investigation within the New York art world.

Directed and produced by Ivan Reitman, this was the fourth of 15 films he directed, following Ghostbusters and preceding Twins. The movie stars Robert Redford, Debra Winger, and Daryl Hannah, with supporting roles played by Brian Dennehy, Terence Stamp, and Steven Hill.
