Short description
Released in February 2024, Lisa Frankenstein is a comedy-horror-romance set in 1989. Lisa, a high school misfit, is drawn to a handsome young man from the Victorian era. When a storm and a broken tanning bed in her garage bring the corpse back to life, the two begin a strange relationship. To make him whole, they set out to recover the body parts he is missing, a search that turns violent. Lisa's father, meanwhile, is preparing to remarry, and his new stepdaughter Taffy happens to be the most popular girl at school, complicating Lisa's home life.
The film is the second feature directed by Zelda Williams, following her 2018 debut Shrimp, and was written and produced by Diablo Cody, with Mason Novick also producing. Kathryn Newton plays Lisa, Cole Sprouse plays the Creature, Liza Soberano plays Taffy, and the cast includes Henry Eikenberry, Joe Chrest and Carla Gugino, among 37 credited performers.
Made on a budget of about 13 million dollars, the film took in roughly 10 million dollars worldwide. On IMDb it holds 6.1 out of 10 from around 32,000 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 6.4 out of 10 from a much smaller pool of about 600 votes. A critics' rating of 5.6 out of 10 from 208 reviews places it below both audience scores, though not by a wide margin.
What's left behind the scenes
- In preparation for filming, Cole Sprouse trained for several months in Los Angeles with Lorin Eric Salm, studying movement and facial expressions on stage. His character (and Salm played the Creature) is deprived of speech, and Salm had to learn to express his thoughts and emotions without words.
- At the beginning of the film, it is shown how Lisa, as a child, shades a sheet of paper attached to a tombstone with an engraved inscription, and the surname “Frankenstein” emerges. Mary Shelley, author of the original novel “Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus” (1818), learned to write her surname in the same way, using her mother’s tombstone.
