The Brave

Raphael, a Native American man living with his wife and children in a shantytown built around a vast garbage dump, has spent much of his life in and out of jail and sees no way out of poverty. Trying to find work, he meets a businessman named McCarthy, who makes him an offer: a large sum of money in exchange for letting his own torture and killing be filmed. Raphael accepts, takes the payment in advance, and returns home with one week left before he must come back to the place where the cameras will roll. The film follows that final week as he tries to give his family something better and repair his relationships with them.

The Brave is a drama directed by Johnny Depp, who also stars as Raphael and wrote the screenplay with D.P. Depp and Paul McCudden. It was Depp's first feature as director, followed years later by Modi, Three Days on the Wing of Madness. The cast includes Marlon Brando as McCarthy, Elpidia Carrillo as Rita, Marshall Bell, Frederic Forrest and Clarence Williams III.

Released in 1997, the film runs 123 minutes and was produced in the United Kingdom and the United States. Audiences have been mixed on it: it holds a 6.1 rating on IMDb from around 11,000 votes and a 6 on TMDB from roughly 210 votes, while its critics' rating stands at 4.3 out of 10 from six reviews.
