The film was shot on a student grant over several years.
Peter Jackson, the film's director, plays two roles: a bespectacled man (Derek) and one of the bearded aliens (Robert).
All the weapons in the film are made from aluminum pipes, and the alien masks were baked in Peter Jackson's mother's oven.
A similar scene to the cliffside episode, where Derek impales the alien he killed with a machine gun and then shoots from its back, was used in Robert Rodriguez's film "From Dusk Till Dawn".
The mixture used in the film consisted of yogurt, muesli, and green food coloring.
There was never a written script for this film; all the scenes were improvised during filming.
The original title translates to "Bad Taste".
The idea to shoot a sheep with a grenade launcher came from a computer game.
