Bad Taste
Short description
A group of aliens lands on the New Zealand coast with a plan to turn humans into menu items for an intergalactic fast food chain. The town of Kaihoro is emptied to supply the meat, and a government service responsible for space-related threats sends a small team to deal with the invaders. A visitor who arrives in town that same day, a worker collecting donations from residents, is taken captive by the aliens, and the mission to recover him expands into a full assault on their base.
Peter Jackson wrote, produced and directed Bad Taste, which also gave him an on-screen role among a cast led by Terry Potter, Pete O'Herne, Craig Smith, Mike Minett and Doug Wren. It was the first of the fifteen films he has directed in chronological order, followed by Meet the Feebles in 1989. Made in New Zealand with backing from WingNut Films and the New Zealand Film Commission, it runs 91 minutes and mixes action, comedy, horror and science fiction.
Audiences have received the film with moderate warmth: on IMDb it holds 6.5/10 from around 51,000 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 6.3/10 from roughly 949 votes. A critics' rating of 6.5/10 from 22 reviews places professional assessments in line with the general audience response.
What's left behind the scenes
- All the weapons in the film are made from aluminum pipes, and the alien masks were baked in Peter Jackson's mother's oven.
