What's left behind the scenes

  • The Sopranos was originally conceived as a series for FOX TV in the mid-90s, but the project was ultimately not launched there.
  • Tony Sirico, who plays Paulie Gualtieri, had a extensive criminal record, was arrested 28 times, and served time in prison, but became an actor in the mid-1970s and has had no further trouble with the law since then.
  • Silvio's middle name is Manfred.
  • Vincent Pastore, who plays Salvatore 'Pussy' Bonpensiero, was accused in April 2005 of assaulting his girlfriend during an argument in a car: he slammed her head against the gear shift and then threw her out of the vehicle. Pastore was sentenced to community service.
  • John Ventimiglia, who plays restaurant owner and close friend of Tony Soprano Artie Bucco, was arrested for driving under the influence in May 2006. Additionally, a bag with traces of cocaine was found in his possession.
  • The character Silvio Dante (Steven Van Zandt) is based on a character of the same name from one of Steve's stories.
  • Robert Iler, who plays A.J., Tony Soprano's son, was arrested in July 2001 for the armed robbery of two Brazilian tourists and possession of marijuana. He pleaded guilty to the theft charge and received three years of probation.
  • The Sopranos' mailing address is 633 Stag Trail Road, North Caldwell, New Jersey.
  • Michael Rispola auditioned for the role of Tony. David Chase liked his audition so much that he rewrote the role of Jackie Aprile Sr. specifically for him.
  • When Joe Pantoliano was cast in the role, the producers assured him that his character would only appear for two seasons.
  • David Chase considered Christian Malen for the role of Christopher Moltisanti.
  • During the second and third seasons, Steve Shirley was forced to wear a special suit to make him look heavier.
  • Paulie's first name is Peter. Paul is his middle name.
  • Every character in the series has a Philips television.
  • Although the flashbacks in Season 1, Episode 7 are set in 1967, some anachronistic modern vehicle models and people wearing modern clothing can be seen in the background of some scenes.
  • The series was originally intended to be created for the FOX network, with Anthony LaPaglia cast in the lead role.
  • In the very first scene (after the opening credits) of Season 2, Episode 5, when Christopher opens his car door, the camera and film crew can be seen in the reflection.
  • According to TV Guide (March 27, 2005), A.J. Soprano ranked tenth on the list of the '10 Biggest Brats on Television'.
  • At the 26-minute mark of the 13th episode of the first season, the psychologist unlocks the door. It can be seen that the door begins to open on its own before the key has even been inserted into the lock.
  • Steve Shirley, who played Bobby Baccalieri, originally auditioned for the role of FBI agent Skip Lipari.
  • Initially, David Chase wanted different music to play during the opening credits of each episode. However, the producers managed to convince him that viewers should identify the series with a single theme song. Consequently, "Woke Up This Morning" plays during the opening credits of every episode.
  • Originally, the series' main character was supposed to be named Tommy Soprano.
  • Steven Van Zandt and David Proval auditioned for the role of Tony Soprano.
  • Ray Liotta was the producers' original choice for the role of Tony Soprano. However, he turned down the part because he did not want to appear in a television series.
  • Luisa Gross, who played Perry Annunziata's bodyguard in the sixth season, was arrested in May 2006 and charged with causing property damage after breaking into a woman's home and claiming he was there to recover his belongings.
  • Grace Johnston was originally considered for the role of Meadow.
  • The series was very often filmed in real restaurants, pizzerias, and shops.
  • David Chase is a fan of Steve Van Zandt's music. He really wanted Steve to be in the series and even offered him an audition for the role of Tony Soprano. Having never acted before, Steve didn't want to take a role away from a professional actor, so David wrote the role of Silvio Dante specifically for him.
  • Tony, AJ, and Junior all have the middle name John.
  • Lorraine Bracco was initially offered the role of Carmela Soprano, but she turned it down because she felt she had played a similar character in 'Goodfellas' (1990). Consequently, she decided to play the role of Dr. Melfi.
  • Christopher Moltisanti, who attempts to write screenplays, was played by screenwriter Michael Imperioli.
  • Lillo Brancato, who played Tony Soprano's henchman Matthew Bevilaqua in the second season, was arrested in May 2005 on suspicion of being under the influence of drugs. Later, in June 2005, he was arrested for possession of heroin. Finally, in December 2005, he was arrested on second-degree murder charges; he was an accomplice in a robbery during which a police officer was killed. In November 2008, Brancato was convicted of second-degree murder and sentenced to 10 years in prison. The actor and an accomplice attempted to steal narcotics from an apartment where Police Officer Daniel Enchateguy happened to be present. A shootout ensued, resulting in the officer's death.
  • According to David Chase, the relationship between Tony and his mother Livia is based on the relationship between David and his own mother, who was also named Livia.
