What's left behind the scenes

  • The plot of the series 'Deadwood' is based on biographical facts and artistic interpretations of the lives of historical figures who settled in the town—American pioneers and entrepreneurs.
  • Upon the completion of filming for the third season, the actors' contracts were not renewed for a fourth season, although HBO did not officially cancel the series. For some time, the producers discussed the possibility of releasing at least two TV movies with the network's management to bring the story to a logical conclusion, but the negotiations were unsuccessful.
  • Wild Bill Hickok (1837-1876) lived for only 39 years, but here he is depicted as being older than he was in reality.
  • Before filming this project, Robin Weigert was primarily a theater actress. For her final auditions in Los Angeles, she rented a ranch hand's outfit, wore it to the audition, and made such an impression on everyone that the role was given to her immediately. On her flight back to New York, she sat with screenwriter David Milch, who had swapped seats with her neighbor just to sit next to her and tell stories the entire way.
  • Throughout the series, several actors originally cast as extras were trusted with speaking lines. This was partly a result of David Milch's habit of making on-the-fly changes to the script during production. He would regularly decide during filming that a particular scene required a line, improvise one, and immediately give it to one of the extras already present in the scene. If he liked how the line sounded, he would typically continue creating more lines for that same character in other scenes.
  • When British actor Ian McShane (who was born and raised in Lancashire) was cast in one of the roles, David Milch altered the character's biography. The real-life prototype for the character was born and raised in Chicago and was of Dutch descent, but Milch invented a backstory stating that he was born in England and moved to Chicago as a child. This was done in case any fans noticed traces of an English accent in the actor's voice.
  • To his delight, Keith Carradine had time to grow a real mustache for the role of Wild Bill Hickok, so he didn't have to apply prosthetic ones every day. He did have to wear blue contact lenses, but this only improved his performance; because the lenses made his eyes sore, he was better able to convey the mood of Hickok, who was constantly irritable.
  • HBO offered David Milch the chance to conclude the series with a short fourth season, but he was not satisfied with the terms. When Chris Albrecht of the network's management was asked about the series' conclusion, he stated that Milch had even been promised that the season could consist of 12 episodes if he wished. Milch promised to think about it over the weekend, but the press immediately began reporting on the project's early termination, and Milch moved on to work on the series "John from Cincinnati" (2007).
  • Actress Jerri Jewell was cast in the series after a chance encounter with David Milch at a pharmacy in Santa Monica. She didn't recognize him at first and thought he was some kind of crazy person, especially when he asked for her phone number and wrote it down on a promotional flyer for some antidepressant.
  • Over the course of three seasons, the word 'fuck' and its derivatives were used in the series 2,980 times.
