Short description

A satirical inversion of the ideal of the perfect American nuclear family, they are an eccentric wealthy family who delight in everything grotesque and macabre, and are never really aware that people find them bizarre or frightening. In fact, they themselves are often terrified by "normal" people.

Season 1
Season 1
Season 1 consists of 34 episodes and established the iconic characters and the show's subversive humor: that the "monstrous" Addams family was actually the most loving, stable, and well-adjusted family on television compared to their "normal" neighbors.

Season 2
Season 2 of The Addams Family (1965–1966) continued the sitcom's run of 30 episodes, leaning further into the absurd and cementing the show’s legacy as a cult classic. While 1960s television was rarely serialized, Season 2 expanded the lore of the Addams world and introduced more of their extende…

What's left behind the scenes

  • Initially, John Eccleston auditioned for the role of Lurch the butler.
  • Lurch plays a harpsichord made by the fictional company Krupnik.
  • Thing was typically played by Ted Cassidy's hand. When Cassidy himself needed to be on screen as Lurch, the hand of assistant producer Jack Voglin became Thing.
  • It took two hours to apply Morticia's makeup to Carolyn Jones (1930-1983). The wig she wore was made of human hair.
  • John Astin was offered two names for his character, and he preferred Gomez over Repelli. His son was initially intended to be named Pubert, but due to the similarity to the word 'puberty,' it was decided to name him Pugsley.
  • Wednesday Addams owes her name to a line from a nursery rhyme: '...Wednesday's child is full of woe.' This is a counting rhyme used to teach young children the names of the days of the week.
  • Cousin Itt speaks with the voice of producer Nat Perron. He would record nonsense onto a tape recorder and then play it backward at high speed.
  • The interior decor of the Addams home was copied from Charles Addams' Manhattan apartment, which housed suits of armor, a collection of antique crossbows, and other rarities.
  • Usually, a right hand was used for the role of Thing. Ted Cassidy (1932-1979), who played the butler Lurch, would sometimes slip his left hand into the frame just for mischief. A forearm is attached to the hand, which can be noticed in some scenes.
  • Initially, Jackie Coogan (1914-1984) was not cast as Fester. The actor went home, shaved his head, and came up with a costume and makeup that suited the character. In this appearance, he was hired without hesitation.
  • The interior of the Addams family home consisted mainly of decor elements from the musical 'Unsinkable Molly Brown' (Charles Walters, 1964).
  • The scene in which the toy trains collide and explode was filmed only once, and then shown repeatedly whenever the script required it.
  • Gomez Addams often forgot himself and would put lit cigars in his pocket. To prevent this, the prop masters inserted asbestos plates into the costume of the actor playing Gomez, John Astin.
