What's left behind the scenes

  • Initially, the plan was to film a series about how Nazi Germany captured various countries and the story of the Resistance movement. However, due to the wild popularity of the Star Wars franchise and other sci-fi hits, as well as the studio management's firm conviction that Americans would never believe that the US could be captured by fascists, it was decided to film a science-fiction miniseries instead. Other options were considered, but they were ultimately rejected.
  • On the night of October 30, 1982, Dominique Dunne, who was cast as Robin Maxwell, was at home with fellow cast member David Packer. They were preparing for the filming scheduled for the following day. A former acquaintance of the actress arrived and, following a violent argument, strangled her. Actress Blair Tefkin was cast in the role instead of Dunne, and the scenes already filmed with Dunne were reshot with her.
  • The laser effects cost the miniseries creators $1,000 each. The high cost was due to the need to manually add optical effects to the frame during post-production.
  • Due to the high cost of laser effects, it was decided that the Resistance movement would use conventional rifles and pistols. In the script, this was explained by the tight security of the aliens' arsenals.
  • The starships were generally filmed using so-called matte painting (a design and painting technique that allows for the creation of a completely new image based on combinations of various photo and video materials). In some scenes (when the starship is moving), a model of the starship was used.
