What's left behind the scenes

  • Quentin Tarantino directed the final two episodes of the fifth season.
  • In 1999, before the series was sold to the CBS network, it was offered to the commercial network ABC. ABC declined, stating that "the average viewer wouldn't understand anything [in the series]."
  • All the equipment in the laboratory is functional. It was either rented, purchased, or provided for product placement.
  • The characters of Grissom and Willow are based on real-life forensic scientists of the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, Daniel Holstein and Yolanda McLary.
  • The screen shows procedures and technologies used by forensic scientists in real life, but, as the creators of the series admit, they are "condensed for time." Tests that take a few seconds in the series actually take several days or even weeks.
  • During filming, Marg Helgenhour attended actual autopsies on her own initiative.
  • The series' popularity was reflected in an increase in the number of people wishing to take forensics courses.
  • The series repeatedly mentions the Tangiers Casino, built and owned by Sam Brown. This establishment is fictional and does not exist in Las Vegas or anywhere else in the world. TV shows and movies often give casinos this name to avoid lawsuits regarding trademark infringement, or in cases where a local casino does not grant permission to use its name in the project.
  • Before Laurence Fishburne was cast in the role eventually played by William Petersen, the candidates of actors John Malkovich and Kurt Russell were considered. Malkovich seriously considered the option, but after speaking with his friends Petersen and Gary Sinise, he declined, not wanting to tie himself down with a 10-month contract.
  • The characters in the series frequently use tactical flashlights—most often the Surefire M4 Devastator model. (A tactical, or weapon-mounted, flashlight is used in conjunction with a firearm to illuminate a target, but it can also be used to temporarily blind and disorient an opponent).
