Short description
In 2071, roughly fifty years after an accident with a hyperspace gateway made the Earth almost uninhabitable, humanity has colonized most of the rocky planets and moons of the Solar System. Amid a rising crime rate, the Inter Solar System Police (ISSP) set up a legalized contract system, in which registered bounty hunters, also referred to as "Cowboys", chase criminals and bring them in alive in return for a reward.

What's left behind the scenes
- The spaceship is named 'Bebop' (after the musical style), so a more accurate translation of the title is 'Cowboy Bebop'.
- In the 11th episode ('Toys in the Attic'), Spike goes searching for an 'alien' on the Bebop that escaped from an old refrigerator in the hold. The detector Spike uses looks exactly like the motion detectors in the Alien film series.
- The 22nd episode ('Cowboy Funk') features a terrorist named Theodore 'Teddy Bomber,' who stuffed teddy bears with explosives to blow up skyscrapers. Throughout the episode, he constantly tried to explain the purpose of the attacks in his manifesto—opposing the urbanization of the Solar System—but the characters were so absorbed in their own conflicts that they simply ignored both him and his manifesto. This character is clearly reminiscent of the terrorist Theodore John Kaczynski, also known as the Unabomber.
