What's left behind the scenes

  • The characters' names vary by country: they keep their original names in the USA, Russia, Great Britain, the Czech Republic, Poland, Bulgaria, and several other countries. Meanwhile, in Germany, the animated series is called "Chip und Chap"; in the Netherlands, "Knabbel en Babbel"; in France, "Tic et Tac"; in Spain, "Chip y Chop"; in Brazil, "Tico e Teco"; and in Norway, "Snipp og Snapp".
  • The names Chip and Dale are a pun based on the surname "Chippendale" (after Thomas Chippendale, the most prominent English furniture maker of the Rococo and early Neoclassical eras). According to another version, the characters' names are reminiscent of Chippendale, a respectable district in Sydney, Australia.
  • Audiences first saw the chipmunk brothers in the Disney cartoon about Pluto called "Private Pluto." At that time, they did not yet have names or their distinctive features (such as Dale's red nose and Chip's felt hat), and they were actually Pluto's antagonists. Their second appearance was in a Donald Duck short, where the characters' differing personalities began to emerge and Dale's nose "turned red."
  • The mustachioed "mouse" named Roquefort, one of the series' main characters, is called Monterey Jack in the original—named after a popular semi-hard cheese in the USA. During the Russian dubbing, the rodent was given a new name, Roquefort, as this cheese (though French) was better known in the Soviet Union.
  • Contrary to popular belief, Chip and Dale are neither brothers nor relatives. The series' producer and writer, Tad Stones, mentioned in response to fan questions that the chipmunks should be considered simply friends. Therefore, in some episodes, they can be heard referring to each other specifically as friends.
