Season 1
Season one begins in 52 B.C. as Gaius Julius Caesar completes his quest of Gaul after eight years of war and prepares to return with his army to Rome. But while Caesar's self-interested niece Atia and long-lost paramour Servilia anxiously await his return, the ruling patricians despair that Caesa…

Season 2
Season two's storyline picks up right where season one left off: with the 44 B.C. assassination of Gaius Julius Caesar and the near-simultaneous death of Niobe, wife of Caesar's faithful bodyguard Lucius Vorenus. Diverted from his post after learning that Lucius, his assumed grandson, was in fact…

What's left behind the scenes

  • Titus Pullo and Lucius Vorenus are mentioned by Caesar in his 'Commentaries on the Gallic War' in a special 'interpolated novella' concerning rival centurions who attempt to settle their dispute on the battlefield. However, instead of determining a winner, they bravely defend each other while fighting the Gauls, and both emerge from the battle unscathed.
  • The primary production site was the Cinecittà studios on the outskirts of Rome, where many structures of the ancient Roman capital—from the forum to the slums—were recreated. All the sets were destroyed during a fire at the studio in August 2007.
  • The extras portraying Roman legionaries numbered 55. They underwent a two-week training course during which they lived in tents and trained as soldiers of the Roman army. Wake-up was at 5 a.m., and lights out was at 9 p.m. The training included marching, swordsmanship, constructing and dismantling a camp, group exercises, and day and night field drills. They used a nearby lake for washing, as no soap was provided. Only 43 people made it through to the end of the training.
  • Before the first season premiered, five seasons were planned, but due to the project's exorbitant cost, the series was canceled toward the end of the second season. A significant portion of the material prepared for seasons 3 and 4 was squeezed into the final episodes of season 2. At one point, there were plans to film a movie, but it never progressed beyond the conceptual stage.
  • The ruins of Pompeii, Herculaneum, and Ostia Antica were carefully studied for the colors of the statues and temple cladding, as well as the fonts used in street inscriptions.
  • The crowds in mass scenes consisted of actual Romans. The series' producers and directors were convinced that there is something elusive in the appearance of modern Italians that perfectly captures the atmosphere of ancient Rome.
  • Ancient Romans did not use saddles with stirrups, but safety regulations required their use. Stirrups were omitted only during close-up shots.
  • Approximately 2,700 costumes were produced for the first three episodes alone.
  • The armor, helmets, and other metal elements of the attire were handcrafted by Italian master Luca Giampaoli, who created the metal pieces for the main characters' costumes. Mass production (for example, the legionnaires' armor) was outsourced to specialized companies in India.
  • The candles and oil lamps were actually decorated gas lamps, connected to gas hoses that were invisible to the audience.
