What's left behind the scenes
- Commander Adama's final address to the crew was largely improvised by the actor playing the role, Edward James Olmos.
- For the only scene featuring the character played by Ryan Robbins, the actor was 'aged' using special makeup. It was intended that this character would be shown several times over a period of 40 years, appearing older each time, but as a result of the editing process, only his final appearance remained in the film.
- When Michael Hogan's character, the colonel, burns a photo of his wife, it was actually originally a photo of Jenny, the wife of executive producer David Eick. When the colonel's wife, Ellen, appeared in the series (played by Kate Vernon), the scene had to be reshot using a photo of Vernon.
- The scene featuring Mary McDonnell's character taking the oath of office as president is a reference to the historical photograph of US Vice President Lyndon Johnson being sworn in aboard the presidential aircraft following the assassination of John Kennedy.
