What's left behind the scenes

  • The license plate of Drama's car, which the characters are riding in during the opening credits, is QSV 11427.
  • In the first version of the script, Vinnie's press agent, Shaun Davis, was named Sarah.
  • The situation with 'Medellin' at the Cannes Film Festival mirrors the situation with 'Southern Tales' (2006). Both films were made by young directors (Billy Walsh and Richard Kelly) following highly successful independent films ('Queens Boulevard' and 'Donnie Darko' (2001)), which instantly gained cult status and devoted fans. Both films premiered at the Cannes Film Festival. There was considerable hype surrounding the movies prior to their premieres. After the premieres, the films received negative reviews from both critics and audiences, and were released immediately on DVD, bypassing theatrical distribution.
  • The series is partially based on Mark Wahlberg's career in Hollywood.
  • In the ninth episode of the second season, while heading to a U2 concert, Winnie says that a U2 concert during the Joshua Tree tour was the first concert he had ever seen in his life. Vince also mentions that he was seven years old at the time and that Drama took him to the concert. The Joshua Tree tour took place in 1987, and this episode takes place in 2005. Thus, Winnie is 25 years old, and Drama is at least 34.
  • The poster design for the series Five Towns is based on the posters for Blood for Blood (2005).
  • In the 9th episode of the 5th season, during filming preparations, Jason Patric tells Vincent Chase: 'Sequels, water... it's not for me.' Interestingly, Patric starred in the movie 'Speed 2: Cruise Control' (1997), which takes place on the water.
  • In the seventh episode of the second season, the names of the lead actors can be seen on a fictional poster for 'Queens Boulevard': Vincent Chase, Ethan Suplee, Katie Holmes, Zooey Deschanel, Kelly Kruger, and Robert Redford.
  • Ari's phrase "Let's hug it out, bitch" ranked 6th on TV Guide's list of the "20 Best TV Quotes."
  • Sean 'P Diddy' Combs appeared as himself in the seventh episode of the seventh season. He agreed to the role at the suggestion of Mark Wahlberg. Sean's participation was not originally planned for the series, so all of his scenes were improvised.
  • In the third episode of the third season, Dom (Dominic Lombarozzi) attacks famous Hollywood paparazzi A.L. Woody. It was Woody who first photographed Mark Wahlberg for People magazine.
  • According to Doug Ellin, the character of Billy Walsh is based on Rob Weiss.
  • In the series, Vince was supposed to play Pablo Escobar in the film 'Medellin,' but the role temporarily went to Benicio Del Toro. In real life, Benicio was set to play Escobar in Joe Carnahan's 'Killing Pablo,' but the project was shelved. Eventually, Del Toro played Escobar in the film 'Paradise Lost' (2014).
  • In the fourth season, Turtle asks Drama if he has watched '24'. In real life, Kevin Dillon appeared in three episodes of the second season of '24'.
  • In the sixth episode of the second season, Johnny Drama tells Li Lee (Bai Ling) that he had dinner several times with Brandon Lee and played a small role in 'The Crow' (1994). Bai Ling played Mika in 'The Crow'.
  • In the first version of the script, there was supposed to be another character—a cook who lived in Vinnie's house. But by the start of filming, Johnny Drama and this character were 'merged into one'.
  • In the seventh episode of the fifth season, Jeremy Piven and Jeffrey Tambor appear together in a scene. This episode reunited the actors nearly twenty years after they starred together in the series 'The Larry Sanders Show' (1992-1998).
  • In real life, Drama's apartment in the fourth season belongs to Ron Jeremy.
  • When the show's creators offered Kevin Connolly the role of Eric, he was seriously considering retiring from acting.
  • In the fourth season, Vincent played the lead role in 'Medellin'. HBO created a fake trailer specifically for this movie. At the end of the clip, a website address can be seen — www.medellinthefilm.com. This site was specially created in 'support' of the film. It features the trailer, a synopsis of the movie, interviews with the creators, and production photos.
  • Ari Gold's clients (Vin Diesel, Larry David) are real-life clients of Ari Emanuel.
  • Vincent's older brother is Johnny "Drama" Chase (Kevin Dillon). This character is based on Johnny "Drama" Olves (Mark Wahlberg's cousin), whom Donnie Wahlberg asked to look after his younger brother to keep him out of trouble.
  • The character Turtle (Jerry Ferrara) is based on an old friend of Mark Wahlberg — Don Carroll, nicknamed "Donkey." Carroll auditioned for the role, but the Boston native failed the screen test once it was decided that the characters would be from New York. Carroll died on December 18, 2005, from an asthma attack.
  • In the first episode of the fourth season, Billy Walsh (Reese Coiro) says that he is not Italian. Reese Coiro was born in Italy.
  • The German director filming 'Smoke Jumpers' is named Verner Vollstedt. Verner is actually not a German name, but a Scandinavian name of German origin. Stellan Skarsgård, who played Verner, is from Sweden.
  • In practically every episode, Ari is talking to someone on the phone.
  • Johnny Drama says he starred in the series 'Cops on Bikes' rather than 'NYPD Blue'. In real life, Kevin Dillon played Officer Neil Baker in 'NYPD Blue'.
  • Turtle's birthday is August 6th.
  • In the second part of the 'Aquaman' franchise, Jake Gyllenhaal replaced Vincent Chase in the lead role. This situation is a reference to the movie 'Spider-Man 2': Jake practically replaced Tobey Maguire. Shortly before filming began, Tobey seriously injured his back and was unable to perform the required stunts. It is also worth noting that, according to the series' plot, James Cameron directed the first part of the 'Aquaman' franchise. In 1993, Cameron intended to direct 'Spider-Man'; the script was ready, but the project never materialized due to disputes over the film's copyrights.
  • The character Ari Gold (Jeremy Piven) is based on Wahlberg's real-life agent, Ari Emanuel.
