What's left behind the scenes

  • Actress Jane Kaczmarek has three children, all of whom were born via Cesarean section. When filming a non-C-section birth scene in one of the episodes, the actress simply played the woman in labor by relying on memories of all the births she had seen on television.
  • In one episode, Hal returns from a stadium with the children and discovers that Lois has turned all their things upside down. Among the belongings, a pack of Morley cigarettes is visible—the same fictional brand preferred by the Smoking Man in 'The X-Files' (1993).
  • Bryan Cranston performed some of the stunts in the series himself. For example, the actor specifically learned how to rollerblade. Moreover, he personally acted in the scene where he is completely covered by a swarm of bees. 10,000 bees were placed on the actor, and he escaped with only one sting.
  • During the credits, two wrestlers are briefly visible on screen. These are Bret Hart and Chris Benoit.
  • In the pilot episode, the audience learns that the main characters' surname is Wilkerson. Subsequently, however, it was decided to omit the surname entirely. A joke circulated on set that all family members now bore the surname 'Nameless.' This is confirmed in the final episode, 'Graduation,' in a shot where Francis drops a pass, and the surname momentarily appears on it.
  • The animated inserts briefly shown during the opening credits are taken from a 1989 adaptation of a Japanese manga.
  • In the original version of the series, Otto Mankasser and his wife are German. In the German version, their nationality was changed, and the characters were made Dutch.
  • During the opening credits, a kissing couple is shown being attacked by a monster. These are clips from the 1961 horror film 'The Creature from the Haunted Sea' (Roger Corman).
  • Part of the opening credits are shown against footage from Don Huff's adventure film 'One Million Years B.C.' (1966). One shot shows Raquel Welch in the clutches of a giant bird; another shows a fight with a monstrous turtle.
  • The monster rising from the water during the opening credits is the Kraken from Desmond Davis's adventure film 'Clash of the Titans' (1981).
