Short description
A drama about a multi-generational family of cops dedicated to New York City law enforcement. Frank Reagan is the New York Police Commissioner and heads both the police force and the Reagan brood. He runs his department as diplomatically as he runs his family, even when dealing with the politics that plagued his unapologetically bold father, Henry, during his stint as Chief.

What's left behind the scenes
- A family dinner is shown in almost every episode. This was insisted upon by lead actor Tom Selleck, who stated that it would emphasize the great importance the characters place on family and kinship.
- Danny's sons, Jack and Sean, are played by brothers (Jack is the elder).
- Nikki was played by Marlene Lawston in the pilot episode, after which she was replaced in the role by Sami Gale.
- The choice of dishes for family lunches and dinners in the series is the responsibility of the prop master, not the actors themselves, as filming begins early in the morning and sometimes continues for eight hours straight, causing the food to grow cold. The actors in these scenes generally only pretend to eat; in reality, they simply move the food around the plate with a fork or spread butter on a roll without ever taking a bite. Bridget Moynahan, for example, simply presses the food on her plate with a utensil. Others drink water.
- A photo of the World Trade Center towers against a red sky, with the sun visible between the towers, hangs on the wall of Frank Reagan's office. This phenomenon is called "Manhattanhenge," and it occurs four times a year (in December, January, May, and July), when the setting or rising sun is visible from the cross streets of Manhattan.
- The series primarily expresses a conservative view on the political and social issues discussed.
- After signing on for the project, Tom Selleck considered shaving off his signature mustache, but the studio forbade him from doing so.
- Danny Reagan's wife was played by Amy Carlson, but after the seventh season, her contract was not renewed; viewers were told that she died in a medical helicopter accident.
