What's left behind the scenes
- Two horses were injured during filming and had to be put down. The animal welfare organization American Humane issued a statement saying that veterinarians had examined the animals and determined that recovery was impossible. Various animal and wildlife protection organizations lashed out at HBO, criticizing them for the death of the horses. After a third horse died, the network suspended filming pending an investigation, which concluded that the animal was not injured during filming. Regardless, HBO chose to cancel the series.
- The creator of the series, David Milch, struggled with gambling addiction at one time, and the plot is largely based on his own memories. He once jokingly referred to that period of his life as the "most expensive research trip" (for future projects). Working on the series reignited Milch's harmful addiction to gambling.
