What's left behind the scenes

The relationship between Helene and Franz Joseph was not as romantic as depicted in the series. Franz Joseph truly loved her, whereas Sissi remained aloof, clearly not sharing those feelings. Eventually, she began to avoid both him and court life in general as much as she possibly could.
In reality, Sophie was never the Empress of Austria. During the Revolution of 1848, she convinced her husband to abdicate the throne. Therefore, Franz Joseph was already Emperor at the time he met Sissi.
Helene often teased Sissi for being a commoner. In reality, Princess Sissi was the granddaughter of the King of Bavaria, and her mother, Ludovika, was the sister of Archduchess Sophie of Austria (Empress Sophie in this series). Thus, Sissi was Franz's cousin and held a much higher status than Viscountess Helene.
