What's left behind the scenes

  • "War and Peace" is the most expensive screen adaptation of a classic, with a budget of 26 million euros.
  • The project took two years to complete.
  • During production, 15,000 scenes were filmed and 5,000 costumes were sewn.
  • The mini-series is based on Leo Tolstoy's novel "War and Peace" (1869).
  • Natasha Rostova attends her first ball at the Winter Palace in Moscow, although it is actually located in St. Petersburg. Furthermore, before Borodino, she prays in the Church of the Savior on Spilled Blood, which was built on the site of an assassination attempt on a tsar who hadn't even been born yet in St. Petersburg (constructed by decree of Emperor Alexander III between 1883 and 1907). And when she exits the church, it is suddenly a different temple with small white columns on the first tier.
  • Moscow (129 km) is visible from Borodino, along with the silhouette of the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour (construction began in 1839, built in memory of those who perished in the Battle of Borodino).
  • In the tent on the battlefield, near the head of the wounded Bolkonsky, a 'kerasinka' (kerosene lamp) can be spotted. The modern kerosene lamp was invented by pharmacists Ignacy Łukasiewicz and Jan Zeh only in 1853, whereas the events described take place in 1812.
