What's left behind the scenes

Some of the dialogues in the film repeat word for word lines from tape recordings once made by the Stasi, the GDR's Ministry for State Security.
During filming, Edgar Ramírez gained 15 kg to show the changes in Carlos's appearance by the time of his arrest.
Initially, it was intended that the film would be 90 minutes long and that its central event would be the arrest of Carlos in Sudan in 1994. However, while gathering material for the film, director Olivier Assayas realized that restricting the plot to such narrow bounds would be wrong.
Director Olivier Assayas hoped to use some compositions by the alternative rock band The Feelies (1976-1992) in the film, but the members did not grant permission, citing their unwillingness for their work to be associated with terrorism.
