What's left behind the scenes
- In an interview released after the series ended, producers Marc V. Olsen and Will Scheffer clarified that in the final episode, Frank (played by Bruce Dern) did not commit suicide, but simply helped Lois (played by Grace Zabriskie) end her own life.
- In the third season, viewers see an attempt to buy an antique letter from Olby (played by Matt Ross), which ultimately turns out to be a forgery. This detail is a reference to a mid-1980s scandal involving the so-called 'Salamander Letter.' At the center of the scandal was Mark Hofmann, an American fraudster who specialized in forging documents.
- The series features a fictional religious group called the 'United Effort Brotherhood.' It is based on the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (one of the largest Mormon denominations that practices polygamy) and its official wing known as the 'United Effort Plan.'
- Remembering Bill Paxton (1955-2017, who played the lead character Bill Henrikson), Chloë Sevigny (who played one of the lead character's wives) shared that Bill bought bicycles for himself and his female co-stars—Sevigny, Jeanne Tripplehorn, and Jennifer Goodwin. Sevigny and Paxton became close friends and continued to stay in touch even after the project ended. According to the actress, the cast and crew of the series referred to Paxton as the "cheerleader of the project."
