What's left behind the scenes

  • In the first season, the opening credits of each episode feature the Russian phrase 'Youth Wins' (Молодость побеждает). This inscription is absent in subsequent seasons. In 1928, a film titled 'Youth Wins' (Молодежь побеждает) was released in the USSR, directed by Mikhail Gelovani, a Soviet Georgian theater and film actor and director.
  • To a certain extent, the series' plot is based on real events that unfolded in 2010 involving a network of Russian agents embedded in the US many years prior. Some of them had started families, and their closest relatives, neighbors, and colleagues had no idea they were spies. These individuals were arrested but were later returned to Russia in exchange for several Americans.
  • The series was created and written by Joe Weisberg. Between 1990 and 1994, Weisberg worked for the CIA. Like any script written by a former CIA employee, this one had to be submitted to a special commission for approval.
  • Anette Mahendru, who played Nina Krilova, speaks six languages: German, English, Russian, French, Persian, and Hindi, as she spent her childhood and youth in various countries around the world. The actress joked that she was cast in the series simply because the producers decided she actually looked like a spy.
  • Despite the series' fairly average ratings, John Landgraf, the head of FX Networks, allowed it to run for all six seasons originally planned by the showrunners, although many other networks would have canceled such a project long ago.
  • Keri Russell (who played Elizabeth Jennings) was eight months pregnant when filming for the fourth season ended. The creators managed to hide her pregnancy by setting most of the season's action in winter (so that winter clothing concealed the pregnancy) and, at times, by using CGI to slightly alter her silhouette.
  • At first, Noah Emmerich declined the role of Stan because he was quite tired of playing law enforcement officers. He was convinced to read the script once more and think it over by his friend and fellow director Gavin O'Connor.
  • The crew occasionally failed to recognize Keri Russell and Matthew Rhys in their costumes, mistaking them, at best, for supporting actors. Once, someone began calling for the lead actors over a megaphone, after which Rhys approached the person, tapped them on the shoulder, and told them that they had 'been here for a long time.'
