What's left behind the scenes

  • The twelve colony planets are named after the Latin names of the twelve astrological signs of the zodiac, for example, Caprica (from Capricorn), Scorpius (from Scorpio), and Aquaria (from Aquarius).
  • George Lucas and 20th Century Fox sued the producers over the alleged similarity of the storyline to the plot of the science fiction film Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope (1977). In 1980, the claim was dismissed, but the film company appealed, and the case dragged on until 1983, when it was settled out of court. The specific details of the outcome remained unknown to the general public.
  • It was necessary for the Cylon Centurions to be nearly two meters tall, so former basketball players, found and hired by Glen A. Larson, were cast in these roles.
  • Props from this project were subsequently used in Daniel Haller's science fiction action series Buck Rogers in the 25th Century (1979), which was also produced by Glen A. Larson.
  • Glen A. Larson is a Mormon, and elements of this religion can be seen in many episodes of the series.
  • Trained chimpanzees dressed in appropriate costumes played the role of Muffit II, a dog-like robot. Three animals took part in the filming.
  • In the case of the first television series, the cost of each episode exceeded $1 million. A significant portion of this amount went toward special effects, and such high costs often necessitated the reuse of special effects footage in new scenes. Glen A. Larson had originally planned to create a series of television movies.
  • The warriors' helmets resemble the headgear of the pharaohs of ancient Egypt.
  • Jane Seymour had originally signed on to appear in the first of several planned TV movies. However, when ABC insisted on a weekly series, the actress decided not to participate in the project, and her character had to be killed off.
