Short description
Ranma Saotome, a teenage martial artist, and his father Genma travel to the 'cursed training ground' of Jusenkyo in China. There, despite the warnings of the Chinese guard, they fall into the cursed springs. From now on, whenever Ranma is doused in cold water, he turns into a girl and a cute, well-built redhead at that. Hot water changes him back into a man again, but only until the next time. To make matters worse, his father engages him to Akane Tendo, a girl who hates boys.

What's left behind the scenes
- Screenwriter Rumiko Takahashi struggled to come up with a name for the main character, and eventually derived the name Ranma from the Japanese expression 'kait ranma,' which means 'a quick and skillful solution to a problem.'
- Both the character of Ranma and the series as a whole were inspired by Ryunosuke Fujinami, a character from screenwriter Rumiko Takahashi's previous project called 'Urusei Yatsura' (1981-1986). Ryunosuke is a girl raised as a son by her father, and through daily training, she becomes a martial arts master. She desperately wants to embrace her feminine side, but various circumstances and obstacles (mainly her own father) stand in her way.
