Short description
Set between the events of Star Wars: Episodes III and IV, the story unfolds during a dark time when the evil Galactic Empire is tightening its grip of power on the galaxy. Imperial forces have occupied a remote planet and are ruining the lives of its people. The motley but clever crew of the starship Ghost — cowboy Jedi Kanan, ace pilot Hera, street-smart teenager Ezra, the “muscle” Zeb, warrior firebrand Sabine, and cantankerous old astromech droid Chopper — is among a select few who are brave enough to stand against the Empire. Together, they will face threatening new villains, encounter colorful adversaries, embark on thrilling adventures, and become heroes with the power to ignite a rebellion.

What's left behind the scenes
- According to screenwriter and producer Simon Kinberg, as soon as it was decided that Darth Vader would appear in the plot, the show's creators first checked if James Earl Jones, who had voiced the character since 1977, was available.
- Zeb's appearance is based on illustrator Ralph McQuarrie's (1929-2012) early concepts of what Chewbacca should look like. Purple stripes were simply added to the look.
- The lightsabers in combat mode flicker just as they did in George Lucas's film 'Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope' (1977), where rotating glowing rods were used during filming. In subsequent films of the franchise, special effects were used, and the rotating rods were replaced with more modern equivalents. Joel Aaron, who was responsible for special effects in the animated series, studied the flicker speed of the lightsabers in the first film to make the weapons in the series as similar as possible to those viewers saw in Lucas's work.
- Work on the series began even before the official announcement of its existence. The project was launched under the code name 'Wolf'. Lightsabers in this project were replaced by 'sun swords', and the Empire was replaced by the 'Tyranny'. Voice actors coming in for auditions were not told that the events would take place in the 'Star Wars' universe.
- Darth Maul and Emperor Palpatine were voiced by actor and musician Sam Witwer. Witwer appeared as Galen Marek (code name Starkiller) and voiced the Emperor in the game 'Star Wars: The Force Unleashed' (2008).
- The series' concept is very similar to the one Dave Filoni and Henry Gilroy planned to use for the 'Star Wars: The Clone Wars' project, when it was envisioned that the main characters would not be Obi-Wan Kenobi and Anakin Skywalker. There was an idea to focus on the crew of a smuggler's ship, similar to the Millennium Falcon, consisting of a Jedi named Sendak and his apprentice, a smuggler named Cad—clearly based on Han Solo—his girlfriend, and their 'muscle' or 'fixer' named Lunker. Ultimately, all these characters were significantly changed.
