Short description

In the tradition of Anthony Bourdain's "Kitchen Confidential" and Gelsey Kirkland's "Dancing on my Grave" comes an insider’s look into the secret world of classical musicians. From her debut recital at Carnegie Recital Hall to the Broadway pits of "Les Miserables" and "Miss Saigon," Blair Tindall has played with some of the biggest names in classical music for twenty-five years. Now in "Mozart in the Jungle," Tindall exposes the scandalous rock and roll lifestyles of the musicians, conductors, and administrators who inhabit the insular world of classical music.

What's left behind the scenes

  • Lola Kirk, who plays the role of Haley, learned to play the oboe. Saffron Burrows, the actress playing Cynthia, had to master the cello.
  • Softball teams of professional musicians include the Philadelphia Orchestra Firebirds, the San Francisco Symphomaniacs, and the New York Philharmonic Penguins.
  • In the first episode of the second season, Edward Beiben mentions that Rodrigo de Souza, played by Gael García Bernal, called him Che Guevara. Bernal himself played Che Guevara in the miniseries "Fidel" (David Attwell, 2001) and the biographical drama "The Motorcycle Diaries" (Walter Salles, 2004).
  • The series is based on Blair Tindell's 2005 memoir "Mozart in the Jungle: Sex, Drugs, and Classical Music." Tindell herself played the oboe in the New York Philharmonic.
  • The series creators cast New York musicians for the roles in the crowd scenes. In the second season, famous musicians appeared in small roles—Joshua Bell (violin), Lang Lang (piano), as well as Grammy-winning pianist Emanuel Ax (who played someone playing a computer game in a cheap bar). Given their worldwide fame, they all appeared in the fourth episode of the second season in roles that were highly unconventional for them.
