Short description

This story began back in 1986. Perestroika was already underway, but the Soviet Union had not yet collapsed. It was a time when there was no Internet, hypermarkets and even mobile phones, but they drank water from the tap, there were no traffic jams in Moscow, and the keys to the apartment were quietly left under the rug.

What's left behind the scenes

  • St. Petersburg communists spoke critically of the series, calling it a campaign tool for elections and accusing it of fostering a negative attitude toward V. I. Lenin.
  • Special sets were created at the Belarusfilm studios for certain scenes; for instance, an entire military town was built for the filming of the episode dedicated to Vanya and Serega's military training. Incidentally, Vanya's apartment is a set in a filming pavilion, although even the actors themselves didn't want to believe it at first.
  • Filming for Season 1 took place in the autumn of 2011. Two pilot episodes were filmed with different casts. In the first version of the series: Sergey Yakovlev was played by Alexander Golovin (instead of Dmitry Belotserkovsky); Mikhail Smirnov by Sergey Pokhodaev (instead of Alexander Novitsky for seasons 1–4 and Egor Gubarev for seasons 5–6); and Nikolai Petrovich Smirnov by Mikhail Efremov (instead of Leonid Gromov). The reasons for the casting changes are unknown.
  • Notably, actress Natalya Zemtsova was pregnant during the filming of Season 4. Her pregnancy required adjustments to the shooting schedule, as the scenes with Inga needed to be filmed while Natalya's baby bump was still inconspicuous. The crew was unable to meet these new deadlines, and Natalya returned to the series in her seventh month of pregnancy, requiring the costume designers to step in and help.
  • While preparing for the role, actress Natalya Zemtsova (Inga Borodina) not only read extensively about the 80s online and watched films, music videos, and fashion magazines, but even found clothing from that era in her home's storage loft, some of which her mother allowed her to bring to the set.
  • Almost all the outdoor scenes and some of the interior scenes were filmed in Minsk. Over the course of four seasons, the series' film crew traveled to the capital of Belarus several times. The streets, squares, and community centers that appear on screen are entirely real.
  • The director envisioned Alexander Yakin specifically for the role of Vanya Smirnov, yet the actor and director were unable to meet for a very long time. It turned out that Fyodor Stukov, the director of the first three seasons, wanted to invite Yakin for the auditions for Vanya's role but simply couldn't find him. Later, it was discovered that they lived in the same building, in the same entrance, just on different floors. One day, while Stukov was walking his dog in the yard, Yakin happened to be rushing home. That is how they bumped into each other right at the doors.
