What's left behind the scenes

  • The relationship between the Danes and the Saxons was determined by their ability to understand one another. Although the series "Vikings" (2013) highlights the need for translators, philologists tend to believe that the Danes and Saxons could communicate without intermediaries, much like how modern Spaniards and Portuguese understand each other with practically no effort.
  • Living at the turn of the 9th and 10th centuries, Uhtred was indeed an ancestor of Bernard Cornwell, the author of the "Saxon Stories" book series, which served as the basis for the television series.
  • The Scandinavian word "viking" meant "pirate" or "to go on an adventure," rather than a race or nationality. The Vikings who raided Britain included Danes, Norsemen, and representatives of many other ethnic groups.
  • The ethnic identity of the Danes linked them to the Germanic peoples, Saxons, and Jutes, who had moved to Britain from Denmark and northern Germany four centuries before the events depicted in the series. It could be said that they represented a single people.
  • As a rule, the Germanic peoples and Saxons of that era wore their hair longer than is shown in the series. Their hairstyles may have been shorter than those of the Danes or Norsemen, but they certainly were not short. Nor did the Germanic peoples and Saxons shave their heads bald. In most Germanic cultures (which included both Danes and Saxons), short haircuts were the lot of slaves.
  • In Bernard Cornwell's books, Uhtred is portrayed as a fair-haired giant possessing impressive physical strength.
  • In reality, Germans and Saxons of those centuries did not use rectangular shields in battle. Their shields were round and wooden (sometimes concave). The series creators took this artistic liberty so that viewers could distinguish one group from the other.
  • Bernard Cornwell's father bore the surname Uhtred and descended from the Saxon lineage of Uhtreds. His ancestors owned Bebbanburg fortress (now Bamburgh Castle in Northumberland), which they held despite the Danish invasion and the seizure of northern Britain.
  • Filming took place mostly in Budapest.
  • The series is based on a popular book series by Bernard Cornwell. Uhtred of Bebbanburg, the orphaned son of a Saxon nobleman, was kidnapped and raised by Scandinavians. He later became one of the most respected warriors in the service of King Alfred the Great.
