What's left behind the scenes
- Throughout the series, the viewer repeatedly sees Sam, her daughters, and many other characters pretending to spit on the back of two fingers. This action is rooted in an ancient Jewish superstition that one should spit three times after mentioning death or any other misfortune to ward off evil. Nowadays, spitting is considered unhygienic, and actual spitting has been replaced by an onomatopoeic sound.
- The long gap between the release of the second and third seasons is attributed to the firing of writer Louis C.K., which forced the director and lead actress Pamela Adlon to recruit new writers and learn how to manage them—a task she had been spared from during the first seasons.
