What's left behind the scenes
- For the shoot, Rowan Atkinson had to cut his hair in a medieval style and wear a codpiece.
- Blackadder is based on Edmund, the antagonist of William Shakespeare's (1564-1616) tragedy 'King Lear' (1605-1606), the king's illegitimate son who weaves treacherous plots to seize the crown for himself.
- Rowan Atkinson has a stutter, specifically experiencing difficulty pronouncing the letter 'B'. Before he can utter the letter, he has to visualize it, which is why he pronounces all words containing this letter with particular care. He even conceived of his famous Mr. Bean and gave him that name for this very reason.
- According to Rowan Atkinson, he had no idea how exactly to play Blackadder, or what his voice should sound like, until the moment the cameras started rolling on set.
- According to Tony Robinson, he was very flattered when offered the role of Baldrick. Only later did he learn that many other actors had turned down the part before him.
- The series was filmed primarily in Alnwick—a castle in Northumberland, in the north of England.
- In this season, actor Rowan Atkinson, who played Edmund Blackadder, appeared without his goatee. The actor shaved it off because the girl he was dating at the time didn't like it.
- The series is known for its historical inaccuracies; however, Hugh Laurie played George (later George IV) quite convincingly. George became regent in the absence of his father, George III, which was greatly disliked by his subjects. It is claimed that he lived for his own pleasure and gave no thought to his subjects, who had to pay for all his entertainments. This also explains the remarks in the series about George's struggles with overweight—which are not entirely accurate since he was played by an actor of average build—as George's debauched lifestyle did lead to such problems in reality. Be that as it may, he was unlikely to be as foolish as he is portrayed in the series.
