What's left behind the scenes

  • One of the series' main storylines involves a breakup between the characters played by Fred Savage and Danica McKellar, after which she fades into the background for several months before they reconcile. This plotline was created primarily because McKellar suddenly had a noticeable growth spurt. She was already taller than Savage, and they had begun to look simply ridiculous on screen. Their characters reconciled and got back together once Savage also grew and caught up to his co-star in height.
  • To make it easier for Fred Savage to react to dialogue that would only be overlaid on the image later, a member of the show's creative team remained off-camera to read the lines aloud during the filming of the corresponding scenes.
  • The series was canceled due to waning viewer interest and a constantly expanding production budget. There was another reason for this decision: disputes between the network representatives and the producers. As Kevin, played by Fred Savage, grew older, the producers insisted on introducing 'adult' themes into the plot, while opponents of these changes categorically objected, arguing that such themes were not entirely compatible with the show's designated time slot. (It aired during a time of day conventionally reserved for children and teenage audiences.)
  • The producers themselves were unsure whether the series would continue beyond the sixth season. As a result, a finale was filmed that allowed for ambiguous interpretation (a so-called 'open ending'). The producers only filmed Kevin's final words, performed by Fred Savage, once the decision to cancel the series had been finalized.
  • After filming ended, Fred Savage and Danica McKellar, who played Kevin and Winnie respectively, were repeatedly asked why their characters ultimately broke up. Both replied that this is how it most often happens in life, and that people rarely stay together with their first love.
