What's left behind the scenes

  • Many of the series' characters were given the names of real-life contemporaries of the poet Emily Dickinson (1830-1886). This applies, in particular, to the characters played by Sophie Zucker and Allegra Hart (Abby and Abiah, respectively); however, in this project they are portrayed as enemies of the main character, whereas in reality, they were her close friends.
  • The dialogue in some scenes is based on statements found in Emily Dickinson's letters.
  • In reality, Emily Dickinson never achieved fame during her lifetime, although it remains unclear how strongly she sought fame specifically through her poetry. Very few of Dickinson's poems (fewer than a dozen) were published during her life, and they were published under a pseudonym. Only after Dickinson's death did her sister Lavinia (played on screen by Anna Baryshnikov) find a cache of Dickinson's poems and publish them.
