What's left behind the scenes

  • To better understand the nature of dissociative identity disorder (the condition his character suffers from), Ethan Hawke read the autobiographical book 'A Fractured Mind' (2005), in which the author, Robert Oxnam, discovered in his forties that the episodes of blackouts, depression, and alcoholism he had suffered from for years were caused by the presence of 11 different personalities in his mind. Hawke found that dissociative identity disorder most often arises from abuse experienced starting at an early age.
  • May Calamawy's character became the first character of mixed Arab-Middle Eastern descent in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. No such character exists in the original comics. 'Layla' translates from Hebrew and Arabic as 'night'.
  • In scenes where Steven and Marc appear simultaneously, it was decided not to film Oscar Isaac against a green screen, but instead to film his brother, Michael Benjamin Hernandez, who would portray Isaac.
  • For greater accuracy in the set design, production designer Stefania Cella consulted with Egyptologists and specialists in Egyptian artifacts.
  • Oscar Isaac, who played the lead role, invited Hawke to play Harrow in the miniseries 'Moon Knight' after they ran into each other at a Brooklyn cafe during the pandemic, and after Isaac had seen Hawke in the 2020 historical miniseries 'The Bird of Good Lord'.
  • Studio executives decided to move the setting of 'Moon Knight' to London because so many series are set in New York, and Oscar Isaac decided—though it wasn't in the script—to give the character a British working-class accent. The public disliked Isaac's British accent as early as the release of the first trailer. Isaac explained that he intentionally made Steven's pronunciation caricatured, as that is roughly how residents of the Jewish community in Enfield and British comic actors Carl Pilkington and Peter Sellers (1925-1980) spoke.
  • May Calamawy trained for two months before filming began and was able to perform many of the stunts herself, although the actress also had two stunt doubles.
  • The miniseries' main antagonist, Arthur Harrow, was a minor character who appeared in only one issue of the Moon Knight comics—specifically, the second issue of the second volume, published in April 1985. According to the series creator Jeremy Slater, Harrow was chosen because the only relatively well-known adversary of Moon Knight in the comics was Bushman, who was too similar to Erik Killmonger from the Black Panther comics; therefore, it was decided to create a completely different antagonist. Again, according to Slater, Ethan Hawke, who played the role on screen, played a huge part in shaping Harrow's image.
  • May Calamawy received a message from Sarah Goer stating that she was being considered for a role in an upcoming miniseries; about a week later she went for an audition, and some time after that, she had a screen test with Oscar Isaac, before shortly being informed that she had been cast in the role.
  • The series features real QR codes that work and redirect the user to a page on the official Marvel studio website, where they can read for free the issue of the 'Moon Knight' comic corresponding to that specific episode (the one in which the viewer scanned the QR code).
  • Initially, it was intended to film 'Moon Knight' in Egypt, but due to difficulties in obtaining filming permits, it was decided to organize production in Hungary. According to one of the directors, Mohamed Diab, approximately 3 billion Egyptian pounds, or $165 million, were spent on filming in Budapest.
