What's left behind the scenes

  • The series was produced in collaboration with Sony Pictures, utilizing American technologies. Filming took place simultaneously with the broadcast of the series, and actors received their scripts directly on set. They worked without rehearsals.
  • Pyotr Krasilov, for whom the role of Mikhail Repnin was a debut, was so convincing during the screen tests that he was given the part immediately.
  • The series was a success in Russia, the CIS countries, China, and Greece, after which thoughts of filming a sequel began. According to press reports, filming was planned to start in the fall of 2005. Regardless, a new season was never filmed.
  • A total of 7,200 actors participated in the casting calls held across 14 Russian cities.
  • The main character is a fictional person. Initially, the producers intended to cast a young and unknown actress, which is why Elena Korikova's candidacy was rejected during the first auditions. Subsequently, the producers were unable to find anyone suitable, and during the second screen tests, the role was given to Korikova after all.
  • Two enormous pavilions, each covering 2,600 square meters, were built at Mosfilm for the shoot; they housed the imperial chambers, the ladies-in-waiting's rooms, and sets for other premises. A total of 1,800 lights, controlled by a computer program, were installed. Three directors worked on the set in turns, and at times, the process continued for days without break. Additionally, filming was organized at Alexandria (a palace and park ensemble in Peterhof).
