Short description
Brother Bear 2 continues the story of Kenai, who was transformed into a bear in the earlier film, and his bear brother Koda. Kenai begins having dreams about his human childhood and his friend Nita, the chief's daughter. Nita, now grown, needs Kenai's help: an amulet he gave her long ago must be burned at the place where they once pledged themselves to each other, and only he can complete the task with her. Reluctantly at first, Kenai and Koda travel with Nita toward that place, while she prepares for a marriage arranged back home. The journey forces Kenai to reckon with memories of the life he left behind.
The film is a DisneyToon Studios production directed by Ben Gluck, his first feature before Alpha and Omega. Rich Burns and Roger S.H. Schulman wrote the screenplay. Patrick Dempsey voices Kenai, Mandy Moore voices Nita, and Jeremy Suarez returns as Koda, with Rick Moranis and Dave Thomas as the moose Rutt and Tuke. Running just over an hour, it is a direct-to-video sequel to the 2003 film.
On IMDb it holds a 6.1 rating from around 23,000 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 6.7 from roughly 1,600 votes. A critics' score of 5.3 from eight reviews places it below the audience ratings.
What's left behind the scenes
- Initially, the main characters were intended to be Rutt and Tuke, and the story was to exclude Keenan and Cody altogether, but this idea was rejected.
- By the time the film was released, the voice of the actor who voiced Koda, Jeremy Suarez, had permanently changed. This was the last film where his voice sounded like a child's.
- After completing work on the film, Rick Moranis, who provided the voice of Rutt, retired.
- In the Choctaw language, 'Nita' means 'Bear.' Nita transforms into a female bear.
