Dragnet

A straight-laced Los Angeles police sergeant named Joe Friday, nephew of the well-known officer of the same name, is teamed with Pep Streebeck, a younger and far less disciplined detective. Their contrasting styles complicate the partnership as they look into a string of odd thefts: animals from a zoo, police vehicles, chemicals that could be combined into a dangerous gas, and a supply of adult magazines. Calling cards left behind bearing the word "Pagan" tie the crimes to a cult operating in the city.

Tom Mankiewicz directed the film, the first of the two features he directed in his career, and wrote the screenplay with Dan Aykroyd and Alan Zweibel. Dan Aykroyd plays Joe Friday, Tom Hanks plays Pep Streebeck, and Christopher Plummer, Harry Morgan, Alexandra Paul and Jack O'Halloran appear among the cast of forty-one credited performers. Made for a budget of about 20 million dollars, it took in roughly 67 million worldwide.
