My Sister's Keeper
Short description
Sara and Brian Fitzgerald appear to have a settled family life with their children, but it is upended when their young daughter Kate is diagnosed with leukemia. Neither parent nor her brother is a suitable donor, so the couple decide to have another child, conceived through genetic selection to match Kate and help keep her alive through repeated medical procedures.
Years later, that younger daughter, Anna, decides she no longer wants to continue donating and seeks legal help to take her parents to court over the decisions made about her body. Her move divides the family and forces everyone involved to confront what they owe one another.
Nick Cassavetes directed and co-wrote the film with Jeremy Leven, following his earlier features John Q, The Notebook and Alpha Dog. Cameron Diaz plays Sara, with Abigail Breslin as Anna and Sofia Vassilieva as Kate; Alec Baldwin appears as the lawyer Campbell Alexander, Jason Patric as Brian and Joan Cusack as Judge De Salvo. Made for about 30 million dollars, it took roughly 96 million worldwide. On IMDb it holds 7.3 from around 103,000 votes, and on TMDB 7.4 from a much smaller tally. The critics' rating of 5.6 is noticeably lower than the audience scores.
What's left behind the scenes
- Initially, Elle Fanning was supposed to play Anna Fitzgerald, and Dakota Fanning was to play Kate Fitzgerald. However, Dakota refused to shave her head for the role, and Sofia Vasilyeva was cast in the part instead.
