Byungsoo, a middle-aged film director, visits a building in Gangnam with his daughter, whom he has not seen in years. She wants to study interior design, so he brings her to meet an old acquaintance, Ms. Kim, who owns the multi-story building and works as an interior designer. Ms. Kim leads the two of them upward from floor to floor, showing them the renovations she has carried out and letting them look around each level. From this starting point, the film returns to the bottom and climbs again story by story, revisiting the same building and the encounters that unfold inside it.
Walk Up was released in 2022 and runs 98 minutes. Hong Sang-soo directed and wrote the screenplay, with Kim Min-hee and Hong producing. It is the seventh of fifteen films he directed in chronological order, arriving between The Woman Who Ran and The Novelist's Film. Kwon Hae-hyo plays Byungsoo, alongside Lee Hye-young as Ms. Kim, Song Sun-mi, Cho Yun-hee, Park Mi-so and Shin Seok-ho.
The film received a critics' rating of 8 out of 10 from 29 reviews, noticeably higher than its audience scores of 6.8 on IMDb and 6.4 on TMDB. That gap suggests critics responded more warmly to the film's structure and repetitions than general viewers did.
