Short description

The Alto Knights is a crime drama set in New York in the 1950s, centred on Frank Costello and Vito Genovese, two Italian-American mob bosses whose rivalry shapes the city's underworld. The two men were once close, but jealousy and a string of betrayals turn them into enemies. Genovese, newly out of prison, finds Costello holding the position of boss and refuses to accept a subordinate role, setting in motion a plot against him that will change the Mafia and the country around it.

Barry Levinson directed the film, the twenty-eighth of twenty-eight features he has directed in chronological order, following The Survivor in 2022. Nicholas Pileggi wrote the screenplay, and Irwin Winkler, Jason Sosnoff and Charles Winkler produced. Robert De Niro plays both Genovese and Costello, with Debra Messing as Bobbie Costello, Cosmo Jarvis as Vincent Gigante, Kathrine Narducci as Anna Genovese and Michael Rispoli as Albert Anastasia. The production credits list 110 cast members and 147 crew.

Released in March 2025, the film runs 122 minutes and cost about 45 million dollars to make, against a worldwide box office of roughly 10 million. On IMDb it holds 5.9 out of 10 from 20,000 votes, and on TMDB 6.2 out of 10 from 472 votes. A critics' rating of 5.2 out of 10 from 143 reviews places it below both audience scores.

What's left behind the scenes

  • The original title of the film, The Alto Knights, refers to the famous club of the same name in Little Italy in Manhattan, New York, where influential mobsters often met and discussed criminal matters.
  • Initially, the film was titled Wise Guys (literal translation “Wise Guys”)—in gangster slang, this refers to mobsters who have undergone the “family initiation” ritual.
