Short description
Beck is a bounty hunter sent into the Amazon to bring back Travis, the wayward son of a crime boss who has gone looking for a legendary treasure. What should be a simple retrieval turns complicated: Travis has crossed Hatcher, a local strongman who wants the same prize for himself, and the two men end up on the run together through the jungle. Their uneasy partnership is further strained by Mariana, a Brazilian woman they both become involved with.
Peter Berg directed the film, his second feature after Very Bad Things and before Friday Night Lights. The screenplay is by James Vanderbilt and R.J. Stewart, and the cast is led by Dwayne Johnson as Beck, Seann William Scott as Travis, Rosario Dawson as Mariana and Christopher Walken as Hatcher.
Released in September 2003, the film runs 104 minutes. It was made for around 85 million dollars and earned roughly 81 million worldwide, so it did not recover its production cost at the box office. On IMDb it holds a rating of 6.6 from about 148,000 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 6.4 from around 2,200 votes. A critics' rating of 6.4 from 150 reviews places it close to how general audiences responded, suggesting a broadly similar, middling reception on both sides.
What's left behind the scenes
- Dwayne Johnson's cousin served as his stunt double. Replacing the actor in front of the camera in one of the scenes, he broke his leg.
- Peter Berg claims that during the search for filming locations in Brazil, he and his assistants were robbed, after which the decision was made to film in Hawaii.
- Ewan Bremner is from Scotland. His character in the film, Declan, wears a kilt and plays the bagpipes, which automatically associates him with Scotland in the audience's mind. Nevertheless, Declan speaks with a noticeable Irish accent.
- In one episode, macaques attack the characters of Dwayne Johnson and Seann William Scott in the jungle. However, macaques exclusively inhabit Southeast Asia and North Africa.
- In one episode, the characters played by Dwayne Johnson and Seann William Scott eat a fruit called "conlabos" and are temporarily paralyzed. In reality, the actors are eating cherimoya (fruits from the annona family). They are consumed as food in many countries around the world and do not cause paralysis.
- In one scene with Christopher Walken, images of workers in gold mines are shown on monitors connected to security cameras. These images are a reference to a series of photographs taken by Brazilian photographer Sebastião Salgado at the famous Serra Pelada gold mine in the 1980s.
- The man in the club was Arnold Schwarzenegger. That day, Schwarzenegger was filming for a performance before the National Football League championship game. He dropped by the set of "Amazon Treasure" and was asked to play a cameo role. Among fans, there is a belief that Schwarzenegger passed the baton of action movie heroes to Dwayne Johnson.
