In war-torn northern Italy in 1943, an American soldier and a British lieutenant escape from a Nazi prison train and try to reach the safety of neutral Switzerland. Their journey brings them together with a village priest who helps people flee the Germans, and with a larger group of Jewish refugees from many different countries who are also hoping to cross the border. The two soldiers end up leading this multinational party over the mountains toward Switzerland, a route that demands difficult choices from everyone involved.
The Swiss drama The Last Chance was directed by Leopold Lindtberg and written by Elizabeth Montagu, David Wechsler and Richard Schweizer, with Lazar Wechsler producing for Praesens-Film. Ewart G. Morrison plays Major Telford, John Hoy plays Lieutenant John Halliday and Ray Reagan plays Sergeant James Braddock, alongside Luisa Rossi, Giuseppe Galeati and Romano Calò as the priest. The film runs 113 minutes.
Released in May 1945, the film belongs to a series of wartime Swiss productions from the same director. On TMDB it holds a rating of 6 out of 10 from 23 votes, a modest score reflecting its limited audience rather than its historical standing.
