Hangmen Also Die!

Hangmen Also Die! is a wartime drama set in Nazi-occupied Czechoslovakia. After Reinhard Heydrich, the Reichsprotektor known for his brutal rule, is assassinated, the surgeon who carried out the attack is wounded and goes into hiding. He finds shelter with history professor Stephen Novotny and his daughter Masha, but the occupying authorities respond by seizing hostages from the city, and the professor becomes one of them. With the Gestapo tightening its pressure on the population and threatening to execute the captives, the fugitive doctor and the Czech resistance must find a way to act.

Fritz Lang directed and produced the film, the thirteenth of the twenty-four features he directed in chronological order, following Western Union and preceding The Woman in the Window. John Wexley wrote the screenplay, and Arnold Pressburger produced. Brian Donlevy plays Dr. Franticek Svoboda, with Walter Brennan as Professor Novotny, Anna Lee as Masha, Gene Lockhart as Emil Czaka, Dennis O'Keefe as Jan Horak and Margaret Wycherly as Ludmilla Novotny, among thirty-five credited performers.

Released in April 1943, the film runs 134 minutes. On IMDb it holds a rating of 7.4 from around 7,300 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 6.9 from 143 votes. A critics' rating of 7.9 from 15 reviews places it somewhat above the audience scores.
